THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE Trailer: Denmark’s Oscar Entry Paints a Haunting, Sinister Portrait
Inspired by a true story, The Girl with the Needle draws from one of the most heinous murder cases in Danish history. Magnus von Horn (Sweat) directs Denmark’s Oscar entry from a script he co-wrote with Line Langebeck. The film follows a young factory worker (Vic Carmen Sonne, Godland) who finds herself pregnant and unemployed in post-WWI Denmark until she meets a woman (Trine Dyrholm, In A Better World) who runs an underground adoption agency. She is soon thrown for a loop when she discovers the shocking truth behind her work. The film also stars Besir Zeciri, Avo Knox Martin, Joachim Fjelstrup, and Tessa Hoder. Ahead of its release in US theaters on December 6, MUBI has just released the official trailer for the Cannes selection, featuring stunning black-and-white cinematography by Michael Dymek (EO, A Real Pain).
Here’s the official synopsis:
Karoline (Vic Carmen Sonne), a young factory worker, is struggling to survive in post-WW1 Copenhagen. When she finds herself unemployed, abandoned, and pregnant, she meets Dagmar (Trine Dyrholm), a charismatic woman running an underground adoption agency, helping mothers to find foster homes for their unwanted children. With nowhere else to turn, Karoline takes on the role of a wet nurse. A strong connection is formed between the two women, but Karoline’s world shatters when she stumbles upon the shocking truth behind her work. Inspired by a true story and directed by Magnus von Horn (The Here After, Sweat), THE GIRL WITH THE NEEDLE is an unsettling tale about a woman struggling to find love and a sense of morality.
