BEYOND THE DUPLEX PLANET Trailer: SXSW-Bound Documentary Captures Art and Aging Through the Eyes of David Greenberger (EXCLUSIVE)

BEYOND THE DUPLEX PLANET

As we are getting closer to the 2026 SXSW Film and TV Festival, one documentary feature to be on the lookout for is Beyond the Duplex Planet. Emmy-winning and Grammy-nominated director Beth Harrington’s portrait of periodical artist David Greenberger will premiere at the festival’s Visions section. It follows Greenberger as he documented the elderly for his zine, The Duplex Planet, and the notions of how aging intersects with art and community. It will have its world premiere on Opening Day, March 12, 7:15 PM at Alamo Drafthouse Lamar, where the filmmakers and subjects are expected to appear in-person.

As the official synopsis reads:

In 1979, David Greenberger, a recent art school grad became activities director at a Boston nursing home. David began interviewing the residents, rejecting pat questions with the unexpected: “Which do you prefer – coffee or meat?,” “What is embarrassment?,” and “How close can you get to a penguin?” The result was The Duplex Planet, an early ‘zine characterized by humor, warmth and sincerity. Today David’s work takes the form of spoken word shows and recordings. Beyond the Duplex Planet explores notions of aging and its intersection with art and community. It’s also a slightly ironic look at the life of an artist devoted to documenting the elderly who is himself in his senior years.
