THE BLACK SEA Trailer: Crystal Moselle & Derrick B. Harden’s Drama Explores a Life Transformed Abroad
Indie icon Crystal Moselle (Stake Kitchen; The Wolfpack) is once again blurring the line between fiction and documentary. She teams up with actor/rapper Derrick B. Harden to co-direct The Black Sea, a new cinema verité-like feature about a life turned around overseas. The film, which premiered at SXSW, follows a charismatic Brooklynite (played by Harden himself) who travels to a Bulgarian coastal town and finds unexpected connections – even as he is the only black person in the area. Irmena Chichikova, Stoyo Mirkov, Samuel Finzi, Joanna Nordahl, Sai Banks, and Kaya Cometti also star. The film also features an ensemble of local non-professional actors that helps give the film its authenticity. Indie pioneer Ted Hope and filmmaker Jonas Carpignano (A Ciambra; Mediterranea) are also on board as executive producers. An official trailer has now arrived before Metrograph Pictures releases it in theaters this November.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Khalid, a charismatic big dreamer from Brooklyn, gets stuck in a small town on the Black Sea after chasing an opportunity for money that goes wrong. Being the only black guy in the town, he quickly becomes the center of the village’s attention. His New York City street bop is all he has to survive. In his pursuit to get home he finds connections he never expected, and goes on a surprisingly transformative journey…finding love, community, and a way to make his dreams come unexpectedly true.
The Black Sea opens in theaters November 22. Check out the trailer below.
