SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE Trailer: Cillian Murphy Contends with Guilt and Complicity in New Irish Drama

Following up his Oscar-winning performance in Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy stars as a devoted father dealing with the complexity of discovering a terrible truth in Small Things Like These. Belgian filmmaker Tim Mielants directs this adaptation of the novel by Claire Keegan, whose novella “Foster” was adapted into the Oscar-nominated The Quiet Girl. With its script by Irish playwright Enda Walsh, the drama is set in an Irish village in the 1980s and follows a coal merchant (Murphy) who discovers shocking secrets kept by the local convent. Now, he has to confront his past and must reckon with the silence all around him enforced by the Catholic Church. Emily Watson also stars as a villainous nun, alongside Eileen Walsh, Michelle Fairley, Claire Dunne, and Helen Behan.

The film premiered at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival as the opening film, where Watson also won a Silver Bear for her supporting performance. Murphy also produces alongside Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. An official trailer has now arrived from Lionsgate and Roadside ahead of its U.S. release this November.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Oscar® winner Cillian Murphy delivers a stunning performance as devoted father Bill Furlong in this film based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Claire Keegan. While working as a coal merchant to support his family, he discovers disturbing secrets kept by the local convent — and uncovers truths of his own — forcing him to confront his past and the complicit silence of a small Irish town controlled by the Catholic Church.

Small Things Like These opens in theaters November 8. Check out the trailer and poster below.
