FLOW Trailer: A Cat and His Friends Journey Through The Wilderness in Animated Spectacle

Gints Zilbalodis' FLOW

One of the most acclaimed, visually stunning animated films of the year is, without a doubt, Gints Zilbalodis’ Flow. It premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival to an overwhelmingly positive reception, and went on to win multiple awards at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, including the Audience and Jury Awards. The fantastical, dialogue-less film follows a black cat whose home is destroyed by a great big flood and hops on a boat sailed by a dog, a capybara, a lemur, and a bird. From there, they all explore new wonders and try to survive life in an ocean-covered world. Sideshow and Janus Films, who picked up the Latvian Oscar entry at Cannes, are set to release it in New York and Los Angeles on November 22, before expanding nationwide on December 6.

Following its premiere at TIFF, HtN’s editor-at-large Matt Delman said that he was “completely swept away by FLOW, which impresses from the first frame and nails the animal mannerisms. Humor mixed with danger and friendship, will appeal to kids and their parents. And definitely childless cat ladies—basically everyone should watch this film.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

A wondrous journey, through realms natural and mystical, Flow follows a courageous cat after his home is devastated by a great flood. Teaming up with a capybara, a lemur, a bird, and a dog to navigate a boat in search of dry land, they must rely on trust, courage, and wits to survive the perils of a newly aquatic planet. From the boundless imagination of the award-winning Gints Zilbalodis (Away) comes a thrilling animated spectacle as well as a profound meditation on the fragility of the environment and the spirit of friendship and community. Steeped in the soaring possibilities of visual storytelling, Flow is a feast for the senses and a treasure for the heart.
