EVERYTIME Teaser Trailer: Germany’s Oscar Entry is a Mind-Bending Vision of Grief
Germany’s Oscar submission to the 99th Academy Awards is not your typical look at life after loss. Writer-director Sandra Wollner’s third feature premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival where it won the top Un Certain Regard prize. It stars Birgit Minichmayr, Lotte Shirin Keiling, Tristán López, and Carla Hütterman. With sun-kissed cinematography by Aftersun DP Gregory Oke and 3 Gotham Award nominations, this unconventional, visually captivating drama is not to be missed. It will have an awards-qualifying run this week at Film at Lincoln Center, before 1-2 Special will release it on February 12.
Lead critic Chris Reed wrote in his review, “At first a lyrical exploration of late adolescence and the experimentation that comes with it, the film takes a surprising, tragic turn early on that then drives further unexpected twists. By the end, we are nowhere near where we started, which is the joy of a cinematic odyssey well told… Evocatively shot by cinematographer Gregory Oke, Everytime shares aesthetic resonances with another film of his, Aftersun, carefree, sun-filled images belying the sober truths beneath the surface. The heartfelt performances of the cast prove poignant without undue sentiment, all the more moving because of the actors’ restraint. Despite the insinuation of its title, the film is very much a wholly original meditation on mourning, beautiful in its torment and lovely in its promise of something better on the other side.”
As the official synopsis reads:
On the eve of a family vacation, a shocking tragedy disrupts the lives of Ella (Birgit Minichmayr), her younger daughter Melli (Lotte Shirin Keiling), and their teenage family friend Lux (Tristan Lopez). One year later, after drifting in a state of suspended grief, the trio reunite and embark on a trip to Tenerife, hoping to recreate the family holiday that never happened. Under a strange new sun, they find that the past, present, and future begin to overlap.
