ERNEST COLE: LOST AND FOUND Trailer: LaKeith Stanfield Narrates Raoul Peck’s Chronicle of the Photojournalist
Oscar-nominated director Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro) returns to form in his newest documentary that pays tribute to a pioneering photographer. Ernest Cole: Lost and Found chronicles the life of the South African photographer who captured searing images of Apartheid, for which he won international acclaim in the 1960s. After he was exiled in the United States and Europe, he bore witness to various kinds of racism, but never stopped photographing black life around him until his death of cancer at age 49.
LaKeith Stanfield narrates as the voice of Cole from a script crafted by Peck based on the photographer’s private writings. It had its world premiere at Cannes where it won the L’Œil d’Or for Best Documentary, previously awarded to Oscar nominees Four Daughters and All That Breathes. Ahead of its theatrical release on November 22, Magnolia Pictures has rolled out the official trailer.
In his review from TIFF, Editor-at-Large Matt Delman wrote “Lakeith Stanfield lends his instantly recognizable voice to the storytelling. He inhabits Cole with a believable mix of warmth and cynicism… Peck and Cole, in their work, draw unmistakable parallels between South African apartheid and the racism of the American South. This film is much more than a fancy slideshow. By about the thirty-minute mark I completely forgot I was listening to Lakeith and just believed I was listening to Ernest Cole… Ernest Cole: Lost and Found is a vibrant portrait of a troubled humanist who captured the tormented soul of South Africa and the American South through his magnificent photographs.”
