BLACK BOX DIARIES Trailer: Director Shiori Itô Investigates Her Sexual Assault in Gripping Documentary

In her documentary Black Box Diaries, Japan-based journalist Shiori Itô takes on her most courageous, risky assignment yet – investigating her own sexual assault. The film, which premiered at Sundance, recounts the director’s harrowing experience of rape by a prominent journalist in Japan – an event that made her a key figure in the country’s #MeToo movement. Through raw and intimate footage, Itô documents her journey to seek justice in a legal system that had seen little change in over a century. Ahead of its theatrical release this October, MTV Documentary Films has released the official trailer.

BLACK BOX DIARIES follows Japanese journalist Shiori Ito’s courageous investigation of her own sexual assault in an improbable attempt to prosecute her high-profile offender. Unfolding like a thriller and combining secret investigative recordings, vérité shooting, and emotional first-person video, Shiori’s quest becomes a landmark case in Japan, exposing the country’s desperately outdated judicial and societal systems. 

Black Box Diaries opens October 25 at New York’s Film Forum before expanding to theaters in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago a week later. Watch the official trailer below.
