2023 Independent Spirit Awards Nominations: ‘TÁR’ and ‘Everything Everywhere’ Lead (Full List)
The nominations for the 38th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced early on Tuesday, November 22, recognizing the year’s top achievements in indie film. The ceremony will be held in three months’ time on March 4. The various films nominated will likely gain further traction going into awards season. The nominations were announced by last year’s Best Female Lead winner Taylour Paige (Zola) and 2019 Best Supporting Male nominee Raúl Castillo (We The Animals).
For this upcoming ceremony, the Spirit Awards are shifting to gender-neutral acting categories in lead and supporting performances across film and breakout television. Other category updates include new awards for Best Breakthrough Performance (film) and Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series (television). “We’re thrilled to join the other festivals and award shows that are already moving to celebrate great acting without reference to gender,” Film Independent president Josh Welsh said in a statement. “We’re also happy to welcome non-binary performers into the Spirit Awards without forcing them to choose to identify as male or female.”
Films such as TAR, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Aftersun each lead the pack with over 5 nominations.
