LA BOLA NEGRA Teaser: Cannes-Winning Spanish Epic Follows Generations of Men Grappling with Love & Sexuality
Winner of the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, directing duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s (aka Los Javis) La Bola Negra is an epic like no other. Set in the directors’ native Spain, it follows the lives of three gay men intertwined with love, loss, and repressed desire across three different eras, from the Spanish Civil War to Spain’s dictatorship to 2017. The film is inspired by an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca, a gay Spanish poet who was murdered during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
It stars Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes, Lola Dueñas, Julio Torres, Penélope Cruz, and Glenn Close. After sparking a bidding war for U.S. rights at Cannes, Netflix picked it up for $4-$5 million. It is now set for a release in theaters on October 16, before streaming on Netflix on December 2. The film’s 47-day theatrical window will be the longest to date for a Netflix film.
