TEENAGE SEX AND DEATH AT CAMP MIASMA Trailer: Jane Schoenbrun’s Newest Film Takes Us to a World of Remakes and Psychosexual Madness

With summer around the corner and a wave of successful new horror releases, it’s a good time of year to look out for the next slasher. But you haven’t seen one quite like Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, the third feature from Jane Schoenbrun (I Saw the TV Glow; We’re All Going to the World’s Fair). Fresh off its recent Cannes premiere in the Un Certain Regard section and winning the festival’s Queer Palm, MUBI will release it in theaters August 7.

It stars Hannah Einbinder as Kris, a queer filmmaker who’s hired to direct a new installment of a long-running slasher film series. As she aspires to create a fresh version through her own vision, she visits the long-deserted campground where the original film was shot, whose sole inhabitant is its original star Billy (Gillian Anderson), whom Kris wants to cast in her new installment. As the two become more intimate, weird things begin to occur and both women soon fall down a hole of sexual and psychological chaos. The film also features a packed cast, including Jack Haven, Amanda Fix, Arthur Conti, Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, Sarah Sherman, Patrick Fischler, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Quintessa Swindell, and Kevin McDonald.

Editor-at-large Matt Delman wrote in his Cannes review, “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is firstly a beautiful, romantic, and funny slasher. It also has a lot to say about a lot of different topics, many of which will be relatable to women and queer folks. Rather than attempting to parse meaning with this review, as a cis-white male, it’s better to focus on the audio and visual elements that make the film so striking… While the absurdity levels are high, the film is Jane’s most accessible yet, and should garner them a new tidal wave of fans… As cinephiles, we’re naturally inclined towards voyeurism, and Schoenbrun’s new film delivers the ultimate voyeuristic experience.”
