STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE! Trailer: The Journey of Amy Goodman and ‘Democracy Now!’ is Told in Award-Winning Documentary
How does one deliver reliable, sincere news in an age where truth is distorted and the press is under attack by an ethically compromised administration? Steal This Story, Please!, the newest documentary from Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning directing duo Carl Deal and Tia Lessin, dives into the life and crusading career of independent investigative journalist Amy Goodman and the global injustices she uncovered. It would eventually lead her to establish her longtime TV, radio, and internet news program, “Democracy Now!,” which reports news from a progressive perspective and amplifies voices left out of the conversation. It will celebrate its 30th anniversary this year!
Steal This Story, Please! had its world premiere at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival, before making stops at DOC NYC and IDFA, and picked up multiple Audience Awards at festivals such as Woodstock, Mill Valley, and Palm Springs International. It will open at NYC’s IFC Center on Friday, April 10, where Amy Goodman, Carl Deal, and Tia Lessin will appear for post-screening Q&As during the opening weekend. It will expand to cities nationwide on Friday, April 17.
As the official synopsis reads:
Undeterred by armed soldiers, smooth-talking politicians, and riot police, journalist Amy Goodman has reported some of the most consequential stories of our time. Steal This Story, Please! is a gripping portrait of the trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to truth-telling spans three decades of turbulent history. From the frontlines of global conflicts to the organized chaos of her daily news show “Democracy Now!,” Goodman broadcasts stories and voices routinely silenced by commercial media. Oscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin (Trouble the Water, The Janes) take us behind the scenes with the warm, wisecracking granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi — raised in a tradition of asking hard questions – as she navigates a news landscape reshaped by technology, corporate consolidation, and political assaults on truth itself. Urgent, provocative, and unexpectedly funny, Steal This Story, Please! is both a call to action and a celebration of resistance, posing the question: what happens to democracy when the press surrenders to power?
