YES Trailer: Nadav Lapid’s Satirical Takedown of Israeli Nationalism Arrives in March
After examining Israeli life and identity with the Golden Bear winner Synonyms and his Cannes winner Ahed’s Knee, Nadav Lapid calls out his country’s rising nationalism post-October 7 in his daring new satire, Yes. It premiered at last year’s Cannes in the Directors’ Fortnight section, but became a little too controversial for major fall film festivals. But that shouldn’t take away from it being one of the most challenging, necessary viewings of the year, especially as it follows a jazz pianist in Tel Aviv hired to compose music for a new Israeli national anthem. The film stars Ariel Bronz, Efrat Dor, and Naama Preis. Ahead of its March 27 theatrical release, Kino Lorber has released the official U.S. trailer.
As the official synopsis reads:
In the days following October 7, Y., a jazz musician, and his wife Yasmin, a dancer, resolve to say yes to everything. Y. and Yasmin sell their bodies and souls to the highest bidder, surrendering themselves and their art to Israel’s social, political, and military elite. Soon, Y. is entrusted with a mission of the utmost importance: to compose the music for a rousing, ruthless new national anthem. Feverishly whirling between moments of satire, sincerity, and complete submission, Yes is a visceral, blistering indictment of modern Israel, and an essential addition to post-October 7 cinema.
