BANANA SPLIT Trailer: Two Asian-American Millennials Explore New York in Guerrilla-Shot Dramedy
With the 2026 Dances with Films Festival taking place this weekend in New York City, one film to be on the lookout for is a refreshing black & white dramedy in the vein of Before Sunrise, Lost In Translation, and Frances Ha. Banana Split, written and directed by Walter Kim in his feature debut, follows two millennial Asian-Americans (Jessica Chung and Ming-Gu) who unexpectedly spend one weekend exploring New York while connecting over grief and identity. The film was shot guerrilla-style across NYC and Long Island over 10 days. The world premiere will be held on Sunday, January 18, at Regal Union Square at 4:30 pm.
As the festival synopsis reads:
When a scheduling mishap forces grieving photographer Peter to share his late sister’s New York apartment with the bold and chaotic Alice, an unexpected weekend unfolds. As the two Asian Americans clash, bond, and explore the city, they confront identity, loss, and the strange intimacy of shared spaces. Banana Split is a bittersweet, sharply funny portrait of grief, culture, and accidental connection.
