ANEMONE Trailer: Daniel Day-Lewis Reckons With His Past in NYFF-Bound Drama

Daniel Day-Lewis and Sean Bean in ANEMONE

One of the most anticipated films of this year’s awards season marks the long-awaited return of Daniel Day-Lewis. In his first role in 8 years since Phantom Thread, the three-time Oscar winner came out of retirement to star in Anemone, the feature directorial debut of his son Ronan Day-Lewis. With Ronan directing from a script co-written by father and son, DDL stars as a Northern England-based hermit who gets paid a visit by his estranged brother (Sean Bean) as they confront their complicated past. Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomly, and Safia Oakley-Green also star.

The film will have its world premiere at the 63rd New York Film Festival, where it will screen in the Spolights section. Ahead of its theatrical release on October 3, the official trailer has now arrived from Focus Features.

As the official NYFF synopsis reads:

Three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis roars back to the screen for his first role in eight years in this absorbing family drama directed by Ronan Day-Lewis about lives undone by seemingly irreconcilable legacies of political and personal violence. Co-written by father and son, the Northern England–set Anemone begins as a middle-aged man (Sean Bean) sets out from his suburban home on a journey into the woods, where he reconnects with his estranged hermit brother (Day-Lewis). Bonded by a mysterious, complicated past, the men share a fraught, if occasionally tender relationship—one that was forever altered by shattering events decades earlier. An emotional powerhouse, this directorial debut is assured in both small details and grand gestures as it charts the path toward familial redemption against all odds.
