Vashon Island Film Festival 2025 — Closing Night, Lasting Impressions

As the lights dimmed and the final credits rolled, Vashon Island Film Festival 2025 came to a close at the Vashon Theatre — the beating heart of the weekend’s events. Over four days, the historic venue buzzed with anticipation, laughter, and quiet moments of reflection as audiences took in a diverse slate of films that blended bold storytelling, fresh discoveries, and a strong sense of community.

From thought-provoking documentaries to inventive short films and captivating features, this year’s lineup proved that even on an island, the scope of cinema can feel boundless. Between screenings, filmmakers and festivalgoers spilled onto the sidewalk, swapping reactions and trading stories before heading back inside for the next showing.

When the awards were announced on closing night, applause filled the theatre not just for the winners, but for the collective spirit that made the festival thrive. The Mickey’s Chair Award for Best ShortcutZ went to Pizza Purge, while DJ Ahmet claimed the Quartermaster Award for Excellence in Feature Filmmaking. The Burton Award for Excellence in Short Filmmaking went to Em & Selma Go Griffin Hunting, a standout that charmed audiences with its originality.

Recognition also went to the talent behind the words and performances. Best Screenplay was awarded to Evan M. Landry, Kevin Claydon, and Phil Moniz for Racewalkers, with Moniz also taking home Best Actor. Best Supporting Actor went to Alex Lawther for A Second Life. Best Cinematography honored Brittany Shyne for Seeds, and Best Editing went to Ernesto Martínez Bucio, Karen Plata, and Odei Zabaleta for The Devil Smokes (and Saves the Burnt Matches in the Same Box).

As the last audience members stepped out into the warm night air, the festival left behind a sense of connection — the kind that lingers long after the screen goes dark. For one long weekend, the Vashon Theatre wasn’t just a venue; it was the place where stories came alive, strangers became friends, and Vashon once again proved it’s a small island with a big cinematic heart.
