2000 METERS TO ANDRIIVKA Trailer: Oscar-Winner Mstyslav Chernev Returns with a Devastating Document of Ukraine’s Battlefront

Mstyslav Chernev's 2000 METERS TO ANDRIIVKA

After taking home the Best Documentary Feature Oscar for 20 Days in Mariupol, Mstyslav Chernov returns with another harrowing vision of the ongoing War in Ukraine with his newest documentary, 2000 Meters to Andriivka. The Ukrainian-born director and war correspondent reteams with PBS Frontline and Associated Press to document a Ukrainian platoon’s mission to liberate the Russian-occupied village of Andriivka. The film brought Chernov back to Sundance this year, where he won the World Documentary Directing Award for his unflinching vision. It will open in New York’s Film Forum on July 25 and a week later at Los Angeles’ Laemmle Monica on August 1, with a nationwide rollout to follow.

Here’s the official synopsis:

From the Oscar®-winning team behind 20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL, 2000 METERS TO ANDRIIVKA documents the toll of the Russia-Ukraine war from a personal and devastating vantage point. Following his historic account of the civilian toll in Mariupol, Mstyslav Chernov turns his lens towards Ukrainian soldiers —who they are, where they came from, and the impossible decisions they face in the trenches as they fight for every inch of their land. Amid a failing counteroffensive in 2023, Chernov and his AP colleague Alex Babenko follow a Ukrainian brigade battling through approximately one mile of a heavily fortified forest on their mission to liberate the Russian-occupied village of Andriivka. Weaving together original footage, intensive Ukrainian Army bodycam video, and powerful moments of reflection, 2000 METERS TO ANDRIIVKA reveals with haunting intimacy, the farther the soldiers advance through their destroyed homeland, the more they realize that, for them, this war may never end.

In the Sundance 2025 curtain raiser, editor-at-large Matt Delman wrote, “If you thought trench warfare was a thing of the past, think again. Director Mstyslav Chernev, fresh off his Oscar win for 20 Days in Mariupol, returns to war-torn Ukraine and goes somewhere no journalist has yet been. The frontline is a narrow strip of forest leading up to the small town of Andriivka. Soldiers on both sides have dug trenches and shot at each other from mere meters away. Grenades are tossed, and comrades are lost in extremely intense body cam footage. There are interspersed, quieter moments of reflection. As a 47-year-old soldier smokes a hand-rolled cigarette in a crudely carved-out trench and reflects on the personal changes he wants to make when he gets home, the director’s narration explains how we will die in battle six months later.”
