YANNICK Trailer: Quentin Dupieux’s Meta Comedy Takes Theatre Hostage

Quentin Dupieux's YANNICK

We never seem to be running short these days of a Quentin Dupieux comedy. The director’s first of two new movies from last year, Yannick, will arrive stateside on MUBI April 5. The official trailer has just been released by the distributor/streamer that fans of a mind like Dupieux will certainly marvel. Starring Raphaël Quenard, Pio Marmaï, Blanche Gardin, and Sébastien Chassagne, it follows a disgruntled theater patron who, armed with a revolver, takes the show hostage and demands full creative control over the production. Stars Raphaël Quenard and Pio Marmaï both received César Award noms for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. It also took home Best European Film at last year’s Locarno International Film Festival. Dupieux (Smoking Causes Coughing, Deerskin) shot the entire movie covertly in 6 days solely at a Paris theatre, which is the kind of ambitious independent filmmaking we champion at Hammer to Nail.

Here’s the official synopsis:

On a rare night off, car park guard Yannick attends a production of the play “Le Cocu.” Dissatisfied by the performance, he hijacks the show and demands to be made the playwright in order to get his valuable time back. Despite the ridicule, he is determined to prove even a car park guard can create good entertainment. Shot in secret in just 6 days, Dupieux serves up his signature slice of satire in this quick-fire meta-comedy reflecting on his own relationship with audiences and critics.
