FJORD Trailer: Sebastian Stan & Renate Reinsve Star in Cristian Mungiu’s Gripping Palme d’Or-Winning Drama

Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve in FJORD

Romanian auteur Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days) returned to Cannes this year with his newest intense drama, and left with his second Palme d’Or. Set in a Norwegian coastal town, Fjord stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a conservative Christian couple whose lives and family are placed under scrutiny by their community when allegations of child abuse come to the surface. Following its upcoming stops at TIFF and NYFF, Neon (with its seventh straight Palme win in a row) will release it in theaters October 9.

Savina Petkova wrote in her Cannes review, “Fjord works as an understated critique of the far left and the far right, of allowing too much and not allowing enough and this conceit becomes even clearer in the film’s third act which takes place in court. There, with the benefits of a tense courtroom drama, Mungiu’s script sways between the two extremes, asking the viewer to take a side… It’s not a bad thing to put your audience to the test or to examine their moral concerns beyond political frameworks, and Fjord allows a few detours from that mission… Amidst the wondrous winter landscapes of Fjordthe mountains and the sea with only a few houses huddled in a valley, hope is an endangered species.”

As the official synopsis reads:

From two-time Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu, a Norwegian woman and her devout Romanian husband relocate with their five children to a remote, close-knit, coastal town. Their teenage children form a fast bond with a neighboring family as unease begins to simmer around their rigid beliefs. When allegations of abuse emerge, they are forced to confront a system of judgment that blurs the line between concern and prejudice.
