The Venice Film Festival Announces 2026 Lineup
The Venice Film Festival is coming to the Lido for its 83rd edition, taking place September 2 – 12. Earlier this morning, they unveiled the lineup for its in- and out-of-competition titles. Hammer To Nail will be on the ground for the festival, which is a catapult for awards season contenders. Last year’s nominees that made their premieres at Venice include Bugonia, Frankenstein, The Smashing Machine, and The Voice of Hind Rajab. Unlike the festivals that follow, such as Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF, Venice exclusively showcases world premieres.
As previously announced, Danny Boyle’s Ink (playing in competition), about the rise of Rupert Murdoch, will open the festival on September 2, and has already been picked up by Netflix ahead of its world premiere! Closing the festival is Giovanni Veronesi’s historical drama Dio Ride, which will play out of competition.
Other highlights premiering in competition include Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard, starring siblings Rooney Mara and Kate Mara; Hirokazu Koreeda’s Look Back, his second drama from this year; Casey Affleck’s second directorial venture Company, starring Nick Nolte, Ben Mendelsohn, and Scoot McNairy; Stephane Brize’s Un Bon Petit Soldat, starring his regular leading man Vincent Lindon and Alba Rohrwacher; Lee Chang-dong making his long-awaited return after a decade with Possible Love; Martin McDonagh’s spy period piece Wild Horse Nine; Lance Oppenheim’s Primetime, with Robert Pattinson as Chris Hansen; Florian Zeller’s Bunker, starring Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem; and more.
Documentaries are also a major standout at the festival. Don’t forget that Laura Poitras and Nan Golden’s All The Beauty and the Bloodshed won the Golden Lion at the 2022 edition. Some documentary highlights for this year’s edition include Robert Greene’s Too Much Sugar, Luca Guadagnino’s Bernardo Bertolucci tribute Joie De Vivre, Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw’s Burgundy, Alex Gibney’s Musk, Barbara Kopple’s Union Town, Victor Kossakovsky’s Holy Wood Dust, Wim Wenders returning to documentary with From Inside Out — The Architecture of Peter Zumthor, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s Everest: The Other Side, and Julia Loktev continuing her revoltionary My Undesirable Friends with the world premiere of Part II.
