2024 INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARD NOMINATIONS: ‘Past Lives,’ ‘May December,’ & ‘American Fiction’ Lead The Noms

The 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations have just been announced, crowning this year’s achievements in independent film. The ceremony will be held in a few months on February 24, 2024, in its usual tent in Santa Monica. The various films nominated will likely gain further traction going into awards season. The nominations were announced by Natalie Morales (Spanish Lessons) and Joel Kim Booster (Fire Island).

Three films take the lead this year with the most nominations: Celine Song’s Past Lives, Todd Haynes’ May December, and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction, which won the 2023 TIFF People’s Choice Award. Each film shares 5 nominations, including Best Feature.

Out of all the distributors, A24 takes the lead with the most noms for its diverse films this year. Aside from Past Lives, other nominations include Raven Jackson’s All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Savanah Leaf’s Earth Mama, and Kelly Reichardt’s Showing Up which will be the recipient of the Robert Altman Award.

For last year’s Indie Spirit Awards, several changes were introduced: Gender-neutral acting prizes were initiated, and the budget cap for projects to qualify was raised to $30 million.
