SENTIMENTAL VALUE Trailer: Renate Reinsve is at Odds with Stellan Skarsgård in Joachim Trier’s Cannes Sensation

Four years after stunning the world with her Cannes-winning, breakout performance in The Worst Person in the World, Renate Reinsve and director Joachim Trier reunite for their newest collaboration, Sentimental Value. The film made waves at the Cannes Film Festival, where it not only won the Grand Prix but also received a 19-minute standing ovation at its world premiere. Reinsve stars as an actress mourning the loss of her mother, who is soon thrown for a loop when her long-absent father (Stellan Skarsgård), a prominent film director, returns to her life with an unusual idea to make amends. Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Elle Fanning, Cory Michael Smith, and Anders Danielsen Lie also star.
Trier co-wrote the film with his writing partner, Eskil Vogt, and reunites with his cinematographer from Worst Person, Kasper Tuxen. NEON, which acquired the film before it was selected for Cannes, has set an awards season release date of November 7 for the film and has now rolled out the first trailer.
Savina Petkova wrote in her Cannes review, “In his new film, Trier embraces the melodramatic streaks of storytelling like never before. Since there are few blueprints for artistic father-daughter relationships, his decision to cast two phenomenal Scandinavian actors who are at least a generation and a half apart pays off in the best way possible: we get a tandem of stellar performances, dancing a dance of emotional restraint until one of them messes up the steps. Thanks to its soft-touch handling of familial drama, Sentimental Value feels like a film you’d like to live in, as cozy as a creaky house and as warm as a parent’s embrace.”
Here’s the official synopsis:
Sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star. Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father — and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.
