THE HISTORY OF SOUND Trailer: Paul Mescal & Josh O’Connor Seek Love & Folk Music in Cannes Drama

As awards season is right around the corner, one big contender MUBI has on its hands is a tender queer romance that had audiences swooning at the Cannes Film Festival. The History of Sound unites Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor as two folk lovers in WWI-era America who wind up in a tender romance while setting out to record the music of their countrymen. Olivier Hermanus (Living) directs from a script by Ben Shattuck, adapting his own short story of the same name. It also stars Chris Cooper, Hadley Robinson, Raphael Sbarge, Molly Price, Emma Canning, and Brianna Middleton.
With a release date set for September 12, MUBI has now unveiled the official trailer and poster.
Here’s the official synopsis:
In 1917, Lionel—a young, talented music student—meets David at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve, will shape the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own awareness.
