SENTIMENTAL VALUE New Trailer: Joachim Trier’s Breathtaking Family Drama Arrives in November
After a highly buzzed festival run and plenty of acclaim from audiences and critics alike, Joachim Trier’s funny and emotional Sentimental Value will finally be released in U.S. theaters this November! Co-written by Trier and his writing partner Eskil Vogt, it stars his Worst Person in the World breakout Renate Reinsve and the legendary Stellan Skarsgård as a stage actress and her long-estranged film director father who have an uneasy reunion through cinema. It also features revelatory performances from Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning, including one heck of an Oslo house that’s a character of itself. It also stars frequent Trier collaborator Anders Danielsen Lie, Cory Michael Smith, Jesper Christensen, and Cat Cohen.
The film made its world premiere at Cannes, where it won the Grand Prix. It also went on to screen at Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF. Neon has now released a new trailer ahead of the film’s November 7 release in NY & LA, before expanding in the weeks to follow.
Savina Petkova wrote in her Cannes review, “In his new film, Trier embraces the melodramatic streaks of storytelling like never before. Since there are few blueprints for artistic father-daughter relationships, his decision to cast two phenomenal Scandinavian actors who are at least a generation and a half apart pays off in the best way possible: we get a tandem of stellar performances, dancing a dance of emotional restraint until one of them messes up the steps. Thanks to its soft-touch handling of familial drama, Sentimental Value feels like a film you’d like to live in, as cozy as a creaky house and as warm as a parent’s embrace.”
As the official synopsis reads:
Sisters Nora and Agnes reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav, a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star. Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father — and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.
