LA GRADIVA Trailer: Marine Atlan’s Cannes Winner is a Unique Coming-of-Age Tale
Winner of the Critics’ Week Grand Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, cinematographer Marine Atlan’s directorial debut La Gradiva is a sun-kissed coming-of-age drama that transports viewers to the streets and ruins of Naples. It follows a group of French high school seniors on a class trip to Naples with their worn-out teacher, where they contend with their desires and struggles. Atlan serves as her own cinematographer alongside Pierre Mazoyer. Following its fall festival runs at TIFF and its upcoming U.S. premiere at NYFF, 1-2 Special will release it in select theaters on December 18.
As the official synopsis reads:
In the shadow of Vesuvius, a group of French teenagers on a class trip to Naples grapple with the anxiety and exhilaration of high school graduation amid the ancient ruins of Pompeii. Toni (Colas Quignard), adrift and impulsive; his best friend, James (Mitia Capellier-Audat), popular, alluring, and self-possessed; and Suzanne (Suzanne Gerin), an aspiring artist who feels rejected by her peers, contemplate faded frescoes and debate their generation’s aspirations and shortcomings. While their exhausted but motivated teacher, Mme. Mercier (Antonia Buresi) attempts to direct their attention to their breathtaking surroundings, the students’ passions and insecurities lead them toward an irreversible fracture.
