EMILIA PÉREZ Teaser Trailer: Jacques Audiard Is Back with Sensational Trans-Cartel Musical
Jacques Audiard is a auteur of many surprises. The French writer/director – known for his gritty, socially aware dramas (see A Prophet and Rust and Bone) – is back with a groundbreaking crime musical that took Cannes by storm this year.
Emilia Pérez follows four women who are each trying to pursue their own happiness in the world of crime. Zoe Saldaña stars as a Mexico City-based criminal lawyer who’s hired by the film’s titular antiheroine (Karla Sofía Gascón), a feared cartel leader seeking gender-affirming surgery so that she can live as her authentic self. Selena Gomez is also among the frey as Emilia’s wife and mother of her children. Adriana Paz and Edgar Ramirez also star.
The film won the Cannes Jury Prize and Best Actress Prize for its 4 female leads: Gascón, Saldaña, Gomez, and Paz. It also won the Cannes Soundtrack Award for its original music by Clément Ducol and Camille. It will screen at TIFF and NYFF before arriving in theaters November 1 and streaming on Netflix November 13.
