Jafar Panahi to Embark on His First-Ever U.S. Promotional Tour for ‘It Was Just An Accident’
This may very well be the year of Jafar Panahi. Now able to move freely outside of his home country of Iran, the Palme d’Or winner is set to embark on a U.S. promotional tour to screen his awards contender, It Was Just An Accident. This will be the first time the writer-director will tour within the U.S., a treat for devoted cinephiles to see one of the most courageous filmmaking voices in the flesh.
After more than a decade of being subjected to imprisonment, persecution, and a filmmaking/travelling ban, Panahi made it to Cannes in person for the first time in years, where he deservedly received wide praise and the Palme d’Or for his nailbiting thriller, It Was Just An Accident. “Given that I have to travel around the world, I don’t have much time to go back to Iran,” he jokingly told lead critic Christopher Reed in his interview with the director. “I’m just praying for the day that the U.S. rejects my visas so that I can go back to Iran and breathe a little.”
Christopher Reed also wrote in his review, “By the time It Was Just an Accident reaches its uncomfortable conclusion, very little has actually been resolved, even as much has happened. There are no easy answers in the battle for truth, nor in the struggle for freedom. We are all prisoners of belief, whichever side we’re on. As always, master of his craft, Panahi makes us think deeply about the themes he presents.”
Stops on Panahi’s tour will include landmark arthouse cinemas in New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle. He will also craft a short documentary that chronicles his journey across these cities.
