TWINLESS Trailer: Dylan O’Brien and James Sweeney Connect Through Grief in Sundance Winner

Dylan O'Brien and James Sweeney in TWINLESS

Following his charming and witty 2019 feature debut Straight Up, writer-director-actor James Sweeney is back with a unique new dramedy that wowed audiences at this year’s Sundance. Twinless stars Sweeney and Dylan O’Brien as two men mourning the loss of their respective twins, who strike up a friendship at a support group meeting. Sundance awarded the film both the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award and the Special Jury Acting Award for Dylan O’Brien’s “powerhouse” performance. It also stars Aisling Franciosi, Lauren Graham, Tasha Smith, Chris Perfetti, and François Arnaud. Lionsgate and Roadhouse Attractions have just unveiled the official trailer ahead of the film’s release in theaters on September 5.

Editor-at-large Matt Delman wrote in his Sundance review, “James Sweeney and Dylan O’Brien have incredible chemistry in Twinless, Sweeney’s Straight Up follow-up that had Sundance crowds roaring… Twinless will be a film that people are talking about all year, and I’d suggest watching it before it’s spoiled for you. Even if you see the twist coming, which I didn’t, there is still a lot of movie to go, and Sweeney reaches emotional heights that feel electrifying. Balancing darkly humorous, witty banter with real grieving and loss is a challenge in itself, but Sweeney shifts tones effortlessly throughout while keeping the audience on their toes. If we judge his first two films as a pair in need of distinguishing, then Straight Up was a charming calling card, and Twinless is a revelation.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

In Twinless, two young men meet in a twin support group and form an unlikely friendship. Roman (Dylan O’Brien) and Dennis (James Sweeney) both search for solace and an identity without their other halves and soon become inseparable outside the group. But when Roman meets Dennis’ ebullient co-worker, Marcie (Aisling Franciosi), all is revealed to be not what it seems, as each man harbors secrets that could unravel everything.
