FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER Teaser: Jim Jarmusch’s Golden Lion Winner Arrives This December

Having premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where it picked up the prestigious Golden Lion for Best Film, Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother will certainly be a different kind of family drama to come out this holiday season. A return to form for the writer-director, it is an anthology drama set in three different countries that examines complex family dynamics in pure Jarmuschian fashion. The first sequence, set in New Jersey, stars Tom Waits, Adam Driver, and Mayim Bialik as a father and his two children catching up and toasting with tea. The second sequence, set in Dublin, has Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, and Vicky Krieps as a mother and her two daughters having an awkward reunion over tea and pastries. The third sequence stars Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat as twin siblings revisiting the Paris apartment that belonged to their deceased parents.
The film recently had its North American premiere at the 63rd New York Film Festival as the Centerpiece selection. Ahead of its theatrical release on Christmas Eve, MUBI has released the official trailer and poster for Jarmusch’s 14th feature.
Here’s the official synopsis:
FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER is a feature film, though carefully constructed in the form of a triptych. The three stories all concern the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country. FATHER is set in the Northeast US, MOTHER in Dublin, Ireland, and SISTER BROTHER in Paris, France. The film is a series of character studies, quiet, observational, and non-judgmental – a comedy, but interwoven with threads of melancholy.
