COEXISTENCE, MY ASS! Trailer: Sundance-Winning Doc Explores an Activist/Comedian’s Call To Action Through Humor
Documentarian Amber Fares’ documentary, Coexistence, My Ass!, shines a light on how humor can be a vigorous tool in activism. It follows the rise of Israeli comedian Noam Shuster Eliassi, who grew up with a sense of unity in a Jewish-Palestinian village. As the Israeli-Palestinian conflict became more severe, she created the eponymous one-woman show as a way to ignite unity and rebel against oppression, as well as war. It premiered at this year’s Sundance, where it won the World Documentary Special Jury Award for Freedom of Expression. It swooped up other numerous awards in multiple film festivals this year, including Full Frame and Thessaloniki.
The film will open at New York’s IFC Center on Wednesday, October 29, before expanding to other cities in the weeks that follow. The official trailer has now arrived ahead of its release.
As the official synopsis reads:
COEXISTENCE, MY ASS! follows activist-comedian Noam Shuster Eliassi as she creates a comedy show by the same name. Shot over five tumultuous years, the film traces Noam’s personal, professional, and political journey in tandem with the region’s steady deterioration. Raised bilingual in a mixed Jewish-Palestinian village — the only intentionally integrated community in the country — Noam grows disillusioned with traditional peace activism. She pivots to stand-up and quickly attracts attention across the Middle East. But as her star rises, everything around her falls apart. With biting satire, Noam pushes her audiences to face difficult truths that aren’t always funny but remind us that another reality — grounded in justice and equality — is possible.
