CAROL & JOY Trailer: Nathan Silver Captures a Warm Daughter-Mother Bond in Short Documentary Contender
After working together on the endearing comedy Between the Temples, director Nathan Silver captures the bond between the star of that film, the legendary Carol Kane, and her mother, music teacher Joy Kane, in a short documentary that is sure to warm hearts. Carol & Joy, shot in a verité-like aesthetic by cinematographer Sean Price Williams, observes the two during an afternoon together, where they open up about life, art, and family bonds over some homely piano tunes. The short is executive produced by Natalie Portman and Sophie Mas under their MountainA banner. Following a festival run that included stops at Telluride and NYFF, it is set to stream on the Criterion Channel starting December 1.
As the official synopsis reads:
On New York’s Upper West Side, Academy Award-nominated actress Carol Kane lives with her 98-year-old mother Joy, an active music teacher, former dancer, and lifelong Francophile. In this intimate short vérité documentary shot on 16mm, the filmmaking team behind the acclaimed BETWEEN THE TEMPLES visits Carol and Joy in their home for an afternoon of music and friends and stories — a lifetime in a day.
