PICK OF THE WEEK

Solaris (Criterion) — Hopefully Mike Nordine will be writing a full review of this exciting new Criterion release in the future, but suffice to say: if you love movies, this is a must-have. Buy it on DVD or Blu-ray.

Recommended

In the City of Sylvia (Cinema Guild) — To be totally honest, this film didn’t connect with me the way it did so many other male film writers, but those who like it love it and I’m going to trust their judgment and recommend it here. If you like slow-burn foreign films and can relate to being a shy, awkward dude who has spent one’s entire life pining after pretty girls from afar (to the point of near stalking), then take this baby for a spin! Buy it on DVD.

New/Old to Blu-ray

The Great Dictator (Criterion) — Charlie Chaplin takes on the evil dictator whose softest of crimes was to jack his infamous moustache style. Buy it on DVD or Blu-ray.

Have Not Seen But Really/Kinda/Sorta/Maybe Wanna

Public Speaking (HBO Home Video) — Buy it on DVD.

A Small Act (Docurama) — Buy it on DVD.

The Unloved (Oscilloscope) — Samantha Morton’s directorial debut! Buy it on DVD.

Night After Night (Pathfinder Home Entertainment) — An early work from Catherine Breillat (1979). If you’re a fan of Breillat, you know what you’re getting into. Buy it on DVD.

The Kids In The Hall: Death Comes To Town (A&E Home Video) — Buy the 2-DVD Set.

Transcendent Man (Docurama) — Buy it on DVD.

Wild Card of the Week

Burning Palms (Image Entertainment) — Buy it on DVD or Blu-ray.

Michael Tully is an award-winning writer/director whose films have garnered widespread critical acclaim, his projects having premiered at some of the most renowned film festivals across the globe. He is also the former (and founding) editor of this site. In 2006, Michael's first feature, COCAINE ANGEL, chronicling a tragic week in the life of a young drug addict, world premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film immediately solidified the director as one of Filmmaker Magazine’s "25 New Faces of Independent Film,” a reputation that was reinforced a year later when his follow-up feature, SILVER JEW, a documentary capturing the late David Berman's rare musical performances in Tel Aviv, world-premiered at SXSW and landed distribution with cult indie-music label Drag City. In 2011, Michael wrote, directed, and starred in his third feature, SEPTIEN, which debuted at the 27th annual Sundance Film Festival before being acquired by IFC Films' Sundance Selects banner. A few years later, in 2014, Michael returned to Sundance with the world premiere of his fourth feature, PING PONG SUMMER, an ‘80s set coming-of-age tale that was quickly picked up for theatrical distribution by Gravitas Ventures. In 2018, Michael wrote and directed the dread-inducing genre film DON'T LEAVE HOME, which has been described as "Get Out with Catholic guilt in the Irish countryside" (IndieWire). The film premiered at SXSW and was subsequently acquired by Cranked Up Films and Shudder.
