The soundtrack behind the voices, the sounds of the barrio, is incredibly complex, loud even: next door conversations, arguments, televisions, animals, sewers, music, candles burning, off-screen characters, rain, shouts, birds (“I have always been excited by birds in the evening skies” a man says in Dovzhenko’s POEM OF THE SEA), Ventura’s trembling hands against his clothes, dogs. It is part of the exhilaration of this film and its total resonance.
