We can gather from the info given that the aurelac hunt has gone on for multiple decades . In fact Cees father was probably only a young boy when it began, it may have even started before he was born.
In the beginning, aurelac was probably pretty easy and straight forward to find much like gold during our own gold rush. However within a few short decades finding aurelac probably became far more difficult. The increasing rarity drove prices for the much desired organic "gemstone" or root pearl through the roof. This probably made prospecting for aurelac a good gamble all the way to the point we join this universe in the movie.
So the question becomes why is every body in a panic over this expedition.
We find out that the cargo freighter is on its last trip. And the answer as to why can be found in one of two explanations. Though number two makes the most sense to me.
1. The number of prospectors traveling or returning to the green moon and/or buying freighted supplies to extend their expeditions from the freighting company has dwindled down to economically unsustainable numbers.
Or
2. Using our own readily available knowledge, we can assume the system in which the green moon resides is moving out of the all important travel window. The window of opportunity for visiting the green moon was probably only 80 or so years long and closing very fast as we join the film. Once the window closed the ability to visit this system either became unrecoverabaly expensive or absolutely impossible. If it is for the later reason then it may be many hundreds, thousands, or even millions of years before the system came back around and traveled through the window once again.
It's this possibility of being stuck forever on this moon that gives the movie its superlative tension. Our eyes are instantly drawn to the green and red edge of Cees countdown timer everytime we look at it with her.
There are actually some people, probably many, staying behind on purpose to become settlers/colonists. Also there are probably many thousands that will be left behind because they have no choice. They just do not have any way of leaving regardless of their desires to do just that. We meet some of them, the group who want to buy Cee. They will probably succeed as settlers too. Already they have invented and developed the "juice" that is effective against the hostile moons atmosphere and diseases. As we learn when Ezra says it will clear the spores and dust from your body to Cee.
So in the end people will be remaining on the green moon to learn how to survive without outside support and if human adaptability has taught us anything, they will more than likely succeed. Just imagine, cut off from the rest of humanity essentially forever...now that's an adventure!
