A GREAT Double-Bill Tonight in Austin: Treeless Mountain/The Guatemalan Handshake (8/12/09)

Apologies for being so blatantly New York City-centric at this site lately—well, always—but that’s how it goes, bitches. That said, to combat the past few days of braggadocios postings about yummy events here in the Big Apple, I felt compelled to mention a non-NYC event that makes me wish I was actually somewhere else instead of here.

By ’somewhere else’ I mean good ol’ Austin, Texas, as tonight brings an exceptional Austin Film Society sponsored double-whammy of two of the decade’s most precious indie gems, Treeless Mountain and The Guatemalan Handshake (read my reviews by clicking on each film). Shot on film and speaking in distinctly unique cinematic languages, both of these precious works are inspiring examples of how to make a low-budget production feel like a real life, honest-to-God movie.

Both So Yong Kim and new Austin transplant Todd Rohal will be in attendance at the Alamo South Lamar. Treeless screens at 7pm and TGH follows at 9:30. I will be there in spirit, but if you’re anywhere near Austin, you better be there in body.
