Beyond Hatred is one of those unfortunate films that seemed to slip under most people’s radar. Even though it took home major awards at both Berlin and Sarasota, many people I know still haven’t heard of it (I just caught up with it a few months ago myself). Many of those who have seen it deem it to be one of the finest documentaries of the decade (myself included). Perhaps that strange gap will be filled tonight at 10pm, as Olivier Meyrou’s powerful 1995 film about one family’s effort to heal from the senseless hate crime murder of their gay son screens on PBS’s POV. This is tricky, sensitive material, but Meyrou removes the labeling and preaching to tell a personal tale, without flash or flair, that stings and resonates on a personal, as well as universal, level. Beyond Hatred doesn’t wallow in sorrow or pity. This is a direct testament to the heroic Chenu family, who struggled to conquer the unavoidable temptations of hatred and revenge.
Visit the POV website to watch a trailer and find out specific screening details. Or if you don’t have television (like this sorry fellow), you can buy the DVD at Amazon, or watch it online at the POV website from July 1st-July 16th, 2009.
