A little (sad) note on Eagle. I met him way back then, when he was in Berlin for the festival, showing The Whole Shootin' Match in the Forum. We got along well, and he managed to have a little affair with a friend of mine there (she subsequently died of multiple sclerosis). Eagle liked to party, drink, and all. We stayed in touch and I followed his story as Hollywood got wind of him and dangled promises, and lured him to LA, set him up in a cottage and plied him with sufficient money and such so he could ply himself with other things popular back then in LaLaland. Nose candy. They didn't like what he wrote, pressing him for something more "commercial," Texas done their way with broadside caricatures, and stupid laughs. Eagle didn't take well to that, and being the kind of soul he was he left rather worse for wear. Somewhere along the line of my transient life, and his wilder one, I lost touch. Then I heard he had died, and was told last he'd been seen was standing under a freeway overpass in Houston, bumming money for another drink. It sounded, sadly, in character.

Whether he would have landed in the same place or not evenso, I suspect his trip to Hollywood was basically a destructive negative event for him, and pushed him further along wherever he was headed.

Of such regional cinema I'd include my own Slow Moves (1982, San Francisco and Sierra Nevada foothills), Bell Diamond (1985, Butte Montana), Sure Fire (1989, Circle City, Utah), The Bed You Sleep In (1993, Newport Or.) and I suppose also the 1977 Last Chants for a Slow Dance (Missoula Montana). Later films continued this - Homecoming (2004, Newport Oregon); Over Here (Portland Or.) For info see www.jon-jost.com or for thoughts see www.jonjost.wordpress.com
